How to Use Your Compass
1
Hold it flat at waist height. Needle floats — don't tilt!
2
Let the needle settle. RED end always points NORTH.
3
Rotate the bezel until "N" lines up with the RED needle.
4
Read your bearing: Direction-of-travel arrow meets bezel = heading (0°=N, 90°=E, 180°=S, 270°=W).
5
"Red in the Shed": Set target on bezel, rotate BODY until red needle sits in orienting arrow. Walk!
6
Pace counting: Each pair of steps = ~5 feet. Count "one" each time your LEFT foot hits ground. 20 paces = ~100 feet.
7
Back-bearing: Add 180° to your bearing. If result >360°, subtract 360°. Example: 65° + 180° = 245°.
Compass Quick Reference
Cardinal: N=0°/360° E=90° S=180° W=270°
Intercardinal: NE=45° SE=135° SW=225° NW=315°
Back-Bearing Formula: Your bearing + 180°. If >360°, subtract 360°.
Magnetic Declination: Gilbert, AZ = ~10° East. Not critical for this course.
Whistle Code: 1 blast = "Where are you?" | 2 blasts = "Come to me" | 3 blasts = EMERGENCY
Lost Protocol: STOP → SIT → WHISTLE (3 blasts). Do NOT wander. Leader will find you.

Leader Standard Operating Procedure
LEADER EYES ONLY — DO NOT DISTRIBUTE TO SCOUTS
1. Purpose & Objectives
This SOP establishes procedures for a 45-minute compass navigation adventure at the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch. Scouts navigate a 10-waypoint course (~0.8 miles) learning compass bearings, GPS coordinate reading, pace counting, reciprocal bearings, and basic topographic interpretation.
2. Event Info
LocationRiparian Preserve at Water Ranch, 2757 E Guadalupe Rd, Gilbert, AZ 85234
Troop Size10 Scouts + Adult Leaders
Duration45 min course + 15 min setup + 10 min debrief
Distance~0.8 miles (tightened loop)
DifficultyEasy — Flat terrain, paved and unpaved trails
Emergency911 | Park Ranger: (480) 503-6263
CRITICAL: Buddy system mandatory. No scout navigates alone. Minimum 2 scouts per team.
3. Safety Protocols
  • Hydration check at midpoint (WP5) — leaders enforce water break
  • Stay on marked trails — desert has hidden hazards (cactus, wildlife, holes)
  • 3-whistle-blast protocol: ALL scouts return immediately to nearest adult leader
  • Wildlife: observe from distance only. DO NOT approach nesting birds
  • Heat protocol: If temp exceeds 95°F, shorten to waypoints 1-5 only
  • Lost scout: STOP, sit down, blow whistle, wait for leader
4. Execution Timeline
TimePhaseDetails
T-30 minLeader SetupPre-place colored markers at all 10 waypoints. Walk the course to verify. ~20 min.
T-15 minArrivalScouts arrive at Library Parking Lot. Verify equipment. Buddy assignments.
T-10 minCompass Crash Course10-min hands-on: holding, reading, shooting a bearing, reciprocal.
T-0LAUNCHTeams deploy from Rally Point. Stagger starts by 2 min per team.
T+20Midpoint CheckLeaders verify teams around WP4-5 area. Quick water break.
T+40Rally Call3 whistles — all teams converge at Finish Line (WP9). Headcount.
T+45DebriefQuick review of datasheets. Announce best navigation team.
T+55CleanupRetrieve all 10 waypoint markers. Leave no trace. Final headcount.
5. Leader Talking Points (By Station)

Rally Point: Preserve built 1999, 110 acres, 7 ponds recharge groundwater, ~300 bird species, 4.5+ mi trails.
Ask: "Why do birds travel hundreds of miles to come HERE to the AZ desert?"

WP1 Desert Sentinel: Chapter 46 Gilbert Code governs preserve. Leash law 6ft. No glass/alcohol. No feeding wildlife.
Ask: "Why do parks have rules? What happens if everyone fed the ducks?"

WP3 Bird Blind: Important Bird Area (IBA) — Audubon Society. Peak 1,100+ shorebirds. Burrowing Owls nest in installed burrows.
Ask: "Why do birds need WATER in the desert?"

WP5 Water's Edge: Back-bearing = bearing + 180°. If >360, subtract 360. Critical for retracing steps.
Ask: "If you're lost, how could a back-bearing save you?"

WP6 Hawk's Perch: Triangulation: take 2 bearings to known landmarks, draw lines on map, intersection = your position.
Ask: "What's the difference between TRUE north and MAGNETIC north?"

WP7 Desert Wash: Water Ranch Lake: AZ license required (kids 9 and under exempt). Barbless hooks. 2 trout/2 catfish daily.
Ask: "Why barbless hooks?" (Easier release, less injury, conservation)

Bonus Station: Hidden at 225° / 200ft from WP8. Tests follow-a-bearing skill. Worth 30 pts — biggest single score.
Ask: "Why is precision so important in navigation?"
